Pleasantview Public Housing Projects

Announced in 1951 and completed in 1953 at a cost of $3.1 million, Pleasantview (originally Parker Street Projects) stretched across both sides of North 30th Street from Burdette to Parker. Designed by the Leo A. Daly Company, it featured 235 units—including a distinctive six-story Pleasantview Towers for seniors and families—plus a central administration building that hosted voter drives and clinics. Early residents praised the modern apartments, but decades of deferred maintenance, pest problems, and rising crime eroded the community. Fully demolished in 2010, the site was transformed into the award-winning mixed-income Highlander neighborhood, an “urban village” with townhomes, row houses, health centers, and an intergenerational community hub that preserved some historic community assets.
